FAQs

PRACTICAL INFORMATION:

Where are you based?

I currently offer both online and face to face sessions. Face to face sessions take place in Radlett, at Battlers Green Farm, with free on-site parking. I also have access to rooms in St Albans. Both of these locations are easily accessible from Edgware, Elstree, Borehamwood, Watford, Barnet, and other areas within South Hertfordshire/North London.

How often will we meet?

Therapy sessions are typically on a weekly basis, lasting 50 minutes per session. On occasion, less frequent sessions may be possible, depending on your specific needs.

What happens in a first appointment?

What happens in a first appointment? The first appointment is an opportunity for us to discuss your concerns in detail, and to explore your background. We will consider what you hope to achieve from therapy, and what approach will be most helpful.

How long will therapy last?

The length of therapy varies depending on your goals and circumstances. Some people benefit from short-term focused work, while others choose to engage in longer-term therapy. We will regularly review progress together.

What type of difficulties do you work with?

I work with a range of mental health difficulties, as outlined on the Homepage. There are some situations where specialist or more intensive services may be appropriate. If I do not feel I am the right clinician to support your needs, I will discuss this with you and, where possible, suggest alternative sources of support.

What are your fees?

Fees are outlined on the Therapy page.

How do I book an appointment?

Please email me and I will contact you within 48 hours: hello@gemmarowlandpsychology.com

PROFESSIONAL INFORMATION:

What is a Clinical Psychologist and how are they different from other mental health professionals?

Clinical Psychologists complete a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, which combines academic study, research and extensive supervised clinical practice. They are trained in psychological assessment, formulation and a range of evidence-based therapies. Training spans several years and includes work with children, adolescents, adults and older adults across a variety of mental health settings. Unlike psychiatrists, Clinical Psychologists are not medical doctors and do not prescribe medication. Counsellors and psychotherapists have different training pathways and areas of expertise.

Do you provide Autism or ADHD assessments?

I provide Neurodevelopmental assessments through Berkshire Psychology. Please note that assessment appointments are managed through Berkshire Psychology and may take place in Berkshire.

Is therapy confidential?

Confidentiality is a fundamental part of therapy. Information shared during sessions will remain confidential except in rare circumstances where there are significant concerns regarding serious risk of harm to yourself or another person. These limits to confidentiality will be discussed during the initial consultation.

I am a parent; can you tell me the content of my child’s sessions?

In most situations, I cannot share the content of your child's sessions without their consent. If I become concerned about a significant risk to their safety, I would share information with you to ensure their wellbeing.

I am a young person; will you tell my parents what we talk about?

What you discuss in therapy is private and confidential. I would not routinely share information with your parents without your agreement. The only exception would be if I was concerned about your immediate safety or the safety of somebody else.

I am feeling suicidal, can you help?

If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts, I am sorry that you are going through such a difficult time. Therapy can help people who are experiencing low mood, hopelessness, or occasional suicidal thoughts. However, I am not a crisis service and cannot provide emergency support. If you feel unable to keep yourself safe, have plans to end your life, or are concerned about your immediate safety, please call 999, attend your nearest A&E department, or contact a crisis service immediately.
