Therapy
What To Expect From Therapy:
Therapy with me is collaborative and tailored to your needs. It is a space where you can share concerns, free of judgement. The first session is an opportunity to understand any difficulties, gather relevant background information, and consider what type of support may be most beneficial. Sessions are typically weekly, and we will regularly review progress and adapt the work as needed.
Children, Teenagers and Young People:
If your child is struggling, it can be hard to know how best to help them, and just as hard watching them go through it. Much of my NHS career has involved working with children and teenagers who are experiencing a range of difficulties, including anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, developmental trauma, school avoidance/school-based trauma, self-harm and eating difficulties, and I bring that experience into how I support your child.
For autistic young people, and those with ADHD, I pay particular attention to emotional regulation, anxiety, friendships and difficulties within school settings; areas that often need a different approach.
Engaging in therapy can feel difficult for some young people. Building up trust can take time, and sessions are adapted to suit what each young person needs. This may include using activities such as drawing, games, or walk and talk sessions where appropriate. For therapy to be effective, it is essential that young people feel willing to engage in the process.
When a young person is not ready to engage directly, parent sessions can be helpful. These focus on supporting parents to better understand and respond to their child’s needs at home.
I can also contribute to professional meetings (e.g. schools or multidisciplinary meetings) to support joined-up thinking around a young person’s needs.
Adults:
I have a particular interest in working with women who are struggling with perfectionism, low self esteem and high levels of anxiety, often in the context of underlying neurodiversity. I have many years of experience helping people make sense of what is keeping them stuck in unhelpful patterns, and how to move forwards. The people I work with may have problems such as anxiety, depression, trauma, OCD or generalised difficulties with emotions.
Some people wish to access a more open-ended therapeutic space, where sessions focus on reflection, processing experiences, and having a space to talk freely at their own pace
Post-Diagnostic Support:
If you or your family member has recently received a diagnosis of Autism or ADHD, therapy can provide space to process what this means, both emotionally and practically. We can also explore strategies and supports that may be helpful moving forward.
